English Department News
The English Department has much to be proud of this month.
Kaye Paugh helped create quite a stir when she worked with actor and Paly Alum James Franco to set up a schedule of classroom visits recently. Researching a novel for his creative writing program at UCLA, Franco visited several English classrooms and each of the department’s journalism production staffs. He was gracious and humble, despite the roving flock of teens that followed him between bells.
On November 2, Superintendent Skelly met with Volunteer Transfer Program (VTP) students and students from Jeanne Loh’s American Writers of Color class. The VTP students discussed their experiences at Paly and in the Palo Alto Unified School District. Some students voiced concern over financial and busing obstacles, and others discussed tracking and laning at Paly, which Lo had just spent two days covering in class. It was a good first forum and hopefully next time students will have a chance to talk about the achievement gap, and teacher and peer expectations, which weren’t covered due to time constraints.
Our journalism program continues to garner praise and bring home awards and recognitions.
Paul Kandell, the advisor for The Paly Voice and Verde Magazine, and Ellen Austin, the advisor for the new Viking sports magazine, took students to the California State Journalism Convention in late October.
Sixteen students from Verde, Voice and Viking won awards and gave outstanding presentations at the annual convention of the Journalism Education Association of Northern California. The winners in the event's on-the-spot "write-off" contest included the following:
Honorable mention --- Mary Minno, News
Honorable mention --- Lynn Chang, Editorial Cartooning
Excellent ------ Michael Bloch, Editorial
Excellent ------ Melanie Maemura, News Layout
Excellent ------ Grace la Pier, News writing
Superior ------- The Campanile, large newspapers
Superior ------- Austin Smith, Reviews
Special Recognition ---- Austin Smith --- The judges created this recognition on the spot to honor what must have been a truly exceptional entry.
Paul Kandell also gave a presentation on 'How to Use Paly's Model Journalism Curriculum to get UC Elective Credit."
Voice had its best month ever with 52,000 unique visitors from all over the world.
